Weaning Center Ruhrgebiet

Weaning Center Ruhrgebiet
Promoting respiration and regaining quality of life.

After prolonged ventilation, even small advancements often mean a great deal to patients and their families. At the Weaning Center Ruhrgebiet, we support this journey with specialized medical care and personal dedication. Our goal is to enable more independent breathing and open new perspectives for daily life.

We tailor the process of weaning from ventilation – known as weaning – individually. In doing so, we consider our patients’ health conditions, resilience, and personal goals.

The Weaning Ward

On our weaning ward, we create an environment where patients can feel well cared for. Comfortably designed rooms, a structured daily routine, and coordinated treatment and rest phases provide space for recovery. The necessary medical monitoring ensures safety on the path to more independent breathing.

The proximity of trusted individuals is important to us: relatives and friends are welcome and can accompany the recovery process. Our outdoor area offers mobilized patients the opportunity to spend time outside their rooms and engage with others.

The Medical Team

Every weaning process is unique. Our experienced pulmonologists and intensive care specialists therefore address the individual causes and challenges. They develop a coordinated treatment plan and regularly adjust it to the patient’s progress and resilience. The goal is to relieve the respiratory muscles and gradually strengthen spontaneous breathing.

Our particular strength lies in combining pulmonological and intensive care expertise with a comprehensive internal medicine perspective. In close collaboration with the nursing and therapy teams, we also treat co-existing conditions that complicate weaning. We explain the next steps clearly and involve patients and their families in treatment planning.

The Nursing Team

Trust is built through people who listen attentively and provide reliable support. Our dedicated nursing team is by our patients’ side in daily ward life. With professional skill and personal dedication, they support ventilator weaning and help patients regain confidence in their own abilities.

Whether it’s airway management, mobilization, or communication for impaired speech: we tailor support to what each individual needs. Even small progress is acknowledged. We involve relatives upon request and provide them with guidance for continued support.

Therapy and Pastoral Care

Being able to stand up again, hear one’s own voice, or eat independently – such abilities can mean a great deal of quality of life after a severe illness. Our respiratory and physical therapists help patients ease breathing, clear secretions, and regain strength and mobility. Our speech therapists support the return to speaking and safe swallowing. Individual nutritional therapy is provided by our nutrition experts.

We adapt treatment to each individual’s capabilities and resilience. Concerns and fears also have their place. Psychotherapists and pastoral caregivers offer space for conversations and help in processing the illness. They also support relatives and friends. Pastoral care is provided regardless of religion or worldview.
