Center for Infectious Diseases

On our infectious disease ward (12 beds) and the intensive care and monitoring units, we primarily treat the following conditions:

  • Lung infections
  • Infections of other organs, including sepsis (“life-threatening blood poisoning”)
  • Infections in immunocompromised patients
  • Infections in travelers returning from abroad
  • Fever of unknown origin
  • Tuberculosis and atypical mycobacteriosis
  • Other, including rare, infections

The Department of Pulmonology and Infectiology provides advisory support for infectious disease issues to medical colleagues within the Ev. Krankenhausgemeinschaft, which comprises 4 locations in 3 cities and over 1,000 patient beds. A key focus here is on highly complicated, difficult-to-treat, and life-threatening infections of all organ systems, rare infectious diseases, and those caused by multi-resistant pathogens.

We are also happy to provide infectious disease consultations for external physicians. Please feel free to contact us:

Antibiotic Stewardship (ABS) is the practice of responsible antibiotic use. The goal is to ensure that serious infections are treated effectively and quickly with the correct antibiotic while, for the benefit of patients and the environment, avoiding unnecessary treatments and the resulting side effects and antibiotic resistance. To this end, there is an “ABS Team” at EvK Herne, which, under the leadership of the Department of Pulmonology and Infectiology, makes every effort to achieve these goals. Colleagues from infectious diseases, microbiology, all medical specialties represented at EvK, the pharmacy, and hygiene departments work together with the management in the ABS Team.

Regular ABS audits, further education, and training sessions take place. Resistance development and antibiotic consumption are monitored, and treatment guidelines are constantly adapted to the latest scientific findings.
The clinic is a member of ABS-Netz-West – an association of experts in the field of antibiotic therapy from across NRW – and is committed to the further training of physicians and projects in the field of ABS in NRW and beyond.

The most well-known mycobacteriosis is tuberculosis. While approximately 10 million people worldwide fall ill each year, Germany is considered a low-incidence country with about 4,500 new cases annually. Nevertheless, potential increases in case numbers due to migration and increasing pathogen resistance present us with a challenge.

As pulmonologists and infectious disease specialists, we have the best possible expertise for this disease. Particularly in immunocompromised individuals and those with chronic lung diseases, so-called non-tuberculous mycobacteria can cause sometimes severe illnesses.

For the treatment of these diseases, in addition to our infectious disease ward, specialized outpatient medical care (ASV) is also available, where patients can receive interdisciplinary outpatient care.

Consultation Hours

Wednesdays 12 PM – 4 PM

We would be happy to advise you in our travel medicine consultation hours.

Before the Trip

We offer everything from advice and tips for your planned trip to the administration of all necessary vaccinations, malaria prophylaxis, and tropical fitness examinations (G 35 examination) for travelers.

As an authorized yellow fever vaccination center for the state of NRW, we also perform yellow fever vaccinations.

Important: While most necessary vaccinations are reimbursed by your health insurance, many other services in travel medicine are considered so-called individual health services (IGeL), which you must invest in yourself as preparation for your trip, but which are considered useful – including by the National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians.

Consultation is provided by infectious disease specialists with the additional designation in travel medicine.

After the Return

You can also present if you experience fever, diarrhea, or other symptoms after your return.
By prior appointment or, only in urgent emergencies, via our emergency room at EvK in Herne-Eickel, Hordeler Str. 7-9.

The Department of Pulmonology and Infectiology has full authorization to grant the additional training in Infectiology (ÄKWL) and the designation of Infectious Disease Specialist of the German Society for Infectious Diseases for physicians.
There is a training curriculum with focuses on pulmonological and intensive care infectiology as well as Antibiotic Stewardship.
External further education is supported. Lectures on infectious disease topics are also regularly offered internally.

The task of hospital hygiene is to prevent infectious diseases in patients through preventive measures. EvK Herne has two permanently employed physicians with further training as hospital hygienists, numerous hygiene-commissioned physicians, and several hygiene specialists. There is close integration with clinical infectiology and Antibiotic Stewardship.
