Spectrum of Treatment

Treatment Spectrum of Medical Oncology

We offer modern, guideline-based conventional medical examination and treatment for patients with lung tumors. Our range of medical services in the “Medical Oncology” department at the Thoraxzentrum Ruhrgebiet includes in detail:

Since we can perform almost all examination and treatment methods in our oncology clinic, we offer optimal care on-site:

  • Chemotherapy
  • Radiation therapy
  • Immunotherapy
  • Radiological procedures
  • Follow-up checks to determine status in tumor diseases
  • Treatment for deterioration of general condition

From Monday to Friday, 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM, we are happy to welcome you to our outpatient clinic. You are welcome to make an appointment before starting treatment to clarify any open questions or to be shown our facilities. The core tasks of our outpatient clinic include:

  • Blood sampling
  • Placing venous access
  • Puncturing venous port systems (catheter systems)
  • Administering chemotherapy, vitamin, and bone-strengthening infusions
  • Administering general infusions
  • Preparing and performing punctures

Cancer and its therapy are often accompanied by many problems and complaints. Supportive therapy includes supportive measures for the treatment of cancer patients. It serves to alleviate symptoms such as nausea, skin and mucosal problems, sensory disturbances, and chronic fatigue. Regardless of the patient’s age or the progress of the disease, individual physical, psychosocial, spiritual, and cultural needs are taken into account.

The KAMAKA (Complementary and Alternative Medicine at the Augusta Kranken Anstalten) offers supplementary treatment options as part of supportive therapy. The focus is on the goal of increasing personal well-being. An individual therapy offer can be discussed and created during a KAMA consultation hour.

In order to recognize and precisely classify lymphomas and leukemias, we can specially stain blood cells and examine blood and tissue immunophenotypically using a flow cytometer. Using this method, we can also measure the distribution of lymphocytes, which are important for immune defense.

For many patients, cancer and treatment with chemotherapy or radiation are accompanied by weight loss, malnutrition, mucosal damage, and other side effects. With specialized nursing care, we aim to provide the best possible support for our patients and their relatives:

  • Comprehensive nutritional counseling by qualified nutritionists
  • Special high-calorie meals and drinks
  • Infusion therapy
  • End-of-life care
  • Support for relatives
  • Inspection of the oral mucosa
  • Support with oral hygiene and care
  • Oil aromatherapy in the form of stimulating rubs, tub and foot baths, as well as fragrance lamps

When therapy for a tumor disease is no longer possible, we change the treatment concept. The task of palliative medicine is to treat patients with advanced and incurable tumor diseases actively and holistically in order to maintain the highest possible quality of life. Therefore, the best possible relief and control of disease-related symptoms and pain is the priority. In a specially designated area in our clinic, we do everything we can to meet the needs of our patients and their relatives.

A dedicated and empathetic team of palliative care physicians, palliative care nurses, social service staff, psychologists, chaplains, and volunteers from the Diakonie, as well as our pain service, ensure the patient’s well-being. We plan further care in a weekly palliative care meeting. We also maintain close contact with the coordinators of the Palliativnetz Bochum e.V. facility.

Our goal is to stabilize patients through their inpatient stay to the point where they can be discharged from the clinic. To ensure that the treatment concept can be continued at home if necessary, we involve the patient as well as the relatives and the attending primary care physicians and palliative care physicians in the individual discharge concept.
